heart the art: week 34 (dreams)

this week's HEART the ART prompt is dreams. one of my fondest dreams would be to become a serious traveler. unless we hit the lottery in a biiiiiiiiiiiiiig way that is completely unlikely to happen, but that's why they're called "DREAMS" right?! :) for this page i thought i'd make a list of my top 4 or 5 destinations...but as i started to write them down i sort of realized that there are not many places in the world that i would not like to visit! while i was thinking of a way to convey that visually i remembered that gina's newest digikit has an absolutely fabulous image of a panda bear hugging the globe; i printed him on a transparency to layer over some cool vintage maps and he became the center of my page:

(panda and tiny globe "buttons" from the green day digi kit by gina cunningham, tyggereye art; lots and lots of vintage maps and travel icons from various old books and pamphlets; love elsie "travel dreams" rub-on; oriental trading co minibrads; ranger distress ink; adhesives: tombow monorunner, uhu gluestick, 3m foam tape, sewing machine)

ok yeah, it's a little crowded on there--once again i am metaphorically bumping my head on the low ceilings of a 4x6" page format! but then whenever i think about the places i would go if time and money were no object, i do feel almost overwhelmed by how many amazing sights there are out in the big wide world; so maybe a slightly smooshed and crowded page *WORKS*, eh??! :)

speaking of the kit in question, it's called GREEN DAY and it looks a bit like this:

it's one of gina's new "mini-kits" that she's listed in her etsy shop for only .99 cents! i'd call that a pretty fab value since it's got six 12x12 papers and a bunch of rather fab eco-themed elements... (wouldja LOOK at that gorgeous tree??!) ...and of course digi-crafting is the ultimate earth-friendly option, since you only need to print whatever elements you're actually going to use at any given time! check it out HERE! ♥

don't fear the reapers!

yes.
REAPERS.
plural!!!

it was gina's idea, obviously. most really great swap ideas are. afterall, it was she who thought up the monsta swap, and the art-o-mat one.

when she saw the wistful reaper i made for stef a couple of weeks ago she said, "i'll carve a grim reaper stamp and then LET'S SWAP!"

of course i said yes. i always say yes. if gina ever asks you to swap with her, you should say yes. you will ♥LOVE♥ what you get, i promise!!!

so by the next day she had carved the most amazing and adorable reaper that has ever been seen on this or any other planet!

it took me slightly longer to crochet mine. (though seriously...the patterns in the creepy cute book are *quick* and you really only need beginner-level crochet skills!)

the last time i looked, there was an extra reaper stamp in gina's etsy shop...
...i'm just sayin'...

(thanks, g!!!!!!!!!!)

birds of a feather (blogged together!)

i was on a roll last night and made *THREE* more cards using gina's new feathered friends digi-kit! one of them was even inspired by two different challenges...but both are sort of loosey-goosey so i will not mind if the challenge-setters do not quite agree with me there! :) i combined this week's 365 cards sketch:

with the design dollies' color palette:

and came up with THIS:

(digital elements: feathered friends digikit, gina cunningham, tyggereye art; software: broderbund printshop; font: mom's typewriter; white cardstock: staples; kraft cardstock: bazzill; inkjet transparency: 3m; photo paper: kodak; inks: colorbox; pearls (re-colored w/copics): kaiser; ribbon: may arts; epoxy heart: sticko; rhinestone heart: recollections; adhesives: tombow monorunner, 3m foam tape, sewing machine)

for my next card, i combined the tree, branch and cherry blossom elements digitally in my favorite graphics & layout program, broderbund printshop...and then cut the overhanging bits out by hand to layer them over some leafy 7 gypies patterned paper. instead of using one of the cute birds from the kit, i stamped my favorite hand-carved robin on some vintage text paper, to show how well gina's real life supplies mix with her virtual ones!

(digital elements: feathered friends digikit gina cunningham, tyggereye art; software: broderbund printshop; cardstock: core'dinations; photo paper: kodak; inks: colorbox, ranger & stewart superior; ribbon: may arts; very VERY old twill letters (that i still totally ♥!) by making memories; adhesives: tombow monorunner, 3m foam tape, uhu gluestick, sewing machine)

the last card is the smallest (not quite 4x4") ...and maybe my favorite, since it sort of accidentally MADE ITSELF! i layered the goldfinch transparency onto some text paper for yesterday's card, and then decided he wasn't quite right. so he was just sort of sitting around while i made the other cards last night and as i was sorting through a pile of stuff, he flew off the table and landed on this scrap of basic grey patterned paper...where he looked rather fabulous as you can see:

(digital elements: feathered friends digikit & dino love kit-- gina cunningham, tyggereye art; software: broderbund printshop; cardstock: core'dinations; photo paper: kodak; inks: colorbox, ranger & stewart superior; ribbon: may arts; very VERY old twill letters (that i still totally ♥!) by making memories; adhesives: tombow monorunner, 3m foam tape, uhu gluestick, sewing machine)

never one to look a gift horse--or even a gift BIRD--in the mouth, i grabbed a leftover bit of leafy ribbon and a couple of rub-ons and called it a night! (dontcha just ♥LOVE IT♥ when that happens??!?!?) :)

say hello to my feathered friends!

ok, technically, they are gina's feathered friends...'cause she designed them, see??!

yes sirree, that girl is ON FIRE with the digital kits--this is her *fourth* full-sized release in just the last couple of months! you can check them all out in her etsy shop, plus she has a gorgeous and totally FREE butterfly looking glass mini-kit so that you can try out digital design before you make a commitment. (of course there are still plenty of hand-carved stamps in her etsy shop too, if you're not quite ready to make the leap!)

(all digital images from the feathered friends kit by gina cunningham, tyggereye art...printed on 3m inkjet transparency & avery full-sheet labels; handmade paper: pearl paint; patterned paper: basic grey (layered behind tree trunk) + vintage sheet music; kraft cardstock: bazzill; leaf die: cuttlebug inks: colorbox; adhesives: tombow monorunner, uhu gluestick, 3m foam tape, sewing machine)

as you know, one of my *VERY* favorite things to do when i make hybrid cards is to vary the media on which i print my elements. i think this gives a lot more variety and interest, and it sort of exponentially multiplies the things you can do with any one kit! i print on plain paper and cardstock...sticker paper...photo paper (for a lovely glossy look!) ...and i especially love to print elements on transparencies!

in the card above i combined several elements of the kit using broderbund's printshop software...i placed the tree trunk on top of the green tree patterned paper, and sized everything 5x5". then, after the transparency was printed out, i layered it over some vintage sheet music.

every time i talk about printing on transparencies i get a few questions, so here are some general tips:
  • THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: you MUST use transparencies that are made for inkjet printers!!! if you try to print on hambly you are going to get an inky, smeary mess! i like these by 3m which i get much more cheaply at my local staples (ok, they're still pretty dear at nearly $40 for 50; if you've got scrappy friends maybe you can club together and share a box?)
  • be sure to print on the *TEXTURED* side! (this is the key to not smearing...one side has a slightly "rough" texture to hold the ink!)
  • the above means...if you have text or anything that needs to be oriented in a specific direction, you need to select "transparency" or "iron-on" as your printing medium OR check the "print reversed" in your printer's dialog box (i actually have forgotten to do this and used the transparency anyway with the "pebbly" side up--they are too expensive to WASTE!--and you CAN get away with it...but it looks better if the shiny side is on top!)
  • when printing PHOTOS or digital patterned papers, this techniques works best on lighter, clearer images...if you have very dark or very detailed images they may lose a bit in translation (or you can lighten them a bit in photoshop!)
i hope i have inspired you to try this out...because it really is A LOT of fun! do feel free to ask for more detailed info if you need it, and i will do my best to help! ♥

a new kit BURSTING onto the digi scene!

well, i may have already let the cat out of the bag about gina's new DINO LOVE digital kit, but today i am letting the dinosaur out of the birthday card, in honor of the official release at the tyggereye etsy shop!!!

this card is a perfect illustration of how hybrid papercrafting can get you places that neither plain scrapping or plain digi can. i love that all of the papers & images i used are 100% scalable and look utterly fabulous whether they are half an inch tall (like the dino button), or four inches wide (like the palm trees inside), ...or eight inches square (like the outer card panel) ...or...well... as big or small as i can print them! it's like having every paper collection in EVERY size--with nothing to store!

plus, i can effortlessly add text and embellishments (like the starburst through which my little friend is making his escape) right on my patterned paper*. no template, no tracing, no gluing required.

of course, i could've used drop-shadows to make a *VERY* cute and totally appealing all digital card; but to me there's no substitute for the depth and texture you get with real layers of paper. here i've popped the dino on one layer of foam tape...and raised the front panel from the back on *three* layers. the fact that i sized the palms a bit smaller and manoeuvered them into the opening adds to the feeling of movement, dontcha think?

ok, now tell the truth: as adorable as this guy is...if he wasn't leaping OUT of the card, you'd want to leap INTO it, wouldn't ya?! (yeah, me too!) i guess that's why miss gina calls it "DINO LOVE"! ♥♥♥

(all images from the dino love digital kit by gina cunningham, tyggereye art; additional materials: cry kitty font downloaded free from dafont.com; pop icon brushes downloaded free from designerdigitals.com; kodak premium photo paper; staples inkjet cardstock; colorbox inks; adhesives: tombow monorunner & 3m foam tape)

♥♥♥♥♥

*i know a lot of people like adobe photoshop, and i do own PSE5 which is a very handy and powerful piece of software, but these files will work in pretty much any graphic design or art program you have! i use broderbund's printshop 23 for 99% my digital/hybrid compositions because i find it easier to manipulate layers of papers and images (you never have to lock them to move to the next step), and because printshop assumes you will be using text in a variety of ways and makes it easy and intuitive to do so; whereas PSE's text tool...imo...is almost an afterthought...or at least PSE assumes the PHOTOS are the stars of the show. on the other hand, printshop is *NOT* wonderful for editing photos and has NO blendable layer capability. basically what i am saying is, if you already HAVE art- or graphics software you like, try downloading a free digi-kit (like this one of gina's mebbe??!) and using it in a program with which you are already comfortable before you make a big investment of time or money in software or supplies!!! :)

it's DINO-mite!!! :)

gina's newest digi-kit i mean. or rather i should say gina's *UPCOMING* digi-kit, since technically it's not out yet, but i got special dispensation to give you a little sneak peek!

how fun are those dinosaurs??! not to mention the word art, plus there are TWO alphas & some really cool journaling blocks. but even if you don't like ANY of that... (which frankly seems impossible to me, but let's pretend, ok?!) ...even if you don't like any of that, this kit is worth having JUST for the papers! there are a couple of totally awesome patterns, but as a matter of fact, my faves are those amazingly vivid solids! they have just enough grungy "texture" to be interesting, without overwhelming whatever they are paired with. i absolutely ♥LOVE♥ them, and i hope you do, too... 'cause i think you're gonna be seeing them a lot!

as generally happens when gina is nice enough to let me preview a kit, i just could not wait to play with it, so i used diana's current sketch from sketchy thursdays which looks like this...

...to make a card, which looks like this:

(all images from the "dino love" kit, gina cunningham, tyggereye art; additional supplies: ranger glossy black cardstock; kodak premium photo paper; white matte cardstock from staples; foam stickers & ribbon from michaels; palm tree brad from oriental trading co; fonts--3 the hard way, 3 hour tour & bleeding cowboys--all downloaded free from dafont.com; sewing machine, paper distresser, colorbox & ranger inks)

how fun is that for a little boy's birthday? or for a dino-loving little girl's birthday? or perhaps for a brother-in-law who's just a teeny bit older than me, but i like to give him a really hard time about it??! ;)

this kit will debut in gina's etsy shop soon, so keep your eyes peeled on the tyggereye art blog!

butterflies are *FREE*...for NSD!

ok, i know you've been longing to try the fabulous new tyggereye art digital kits i've been showing off the last few weeks, but maybe you're a little nervous about plonking down your money when you don't know if you're really a "digi kinda gal" yet? well then this is your chance, because gina has made a brand new, very special, very cool, butterfly looking glass mini-mini-kit for national scrapbooking day...and it's completely *FREE*!!! just head over to the tyggereye blog and snag it for yourself!

i made a couple of cards with it last night...the first of what i suspect will be MANY...the first one uses kazan's sketch #51 from 2S4Y:

want to see?

i know you'll be shocked to hear that i totally fell in love with the gorgeous vintage butterflies, but just LOOK AT THEM--they're so vivid and beautiful! and the great thing about digi is, you can make as many as you want, in any size you want! i paired them up with some fabulous woodgrain packing tape i found at the ink pad in new york, and some beautiful iron-on applique from m&j trimming! (being too lazy to set up the ironing board at 10pm last night, i attached it with gluedots and added a few staples for good measure...trust me, that thing is ON THERE!)

as usual, i cut my butterflies out with a few extra layers behind them, so i could layer them on my card. i used DOUBLE layers of foam tape--one piece under each blue butterfly, one piece under each text butterfly--placed near the center of the body, so i could bend the wings up for loads of dimension. here's a slightly better view:

wouldja believe this teeeeeny little (4x4") card has *ALL THREE* of gina's gorgeous papers from the kit on it? the base is made from the soft pink watercolor...the center panel is a slice of the more vibrant print...and the mosaic i printed on a transparency that i cut at the same time as the text papers and the blue butterflies above!

here i've layered the transparency with a piece of gorgeously yellowed vintage dictionary, used another bit of lovely m&j goodness for a body, and placed it on my card with a little more vintage text for a sentiment. the pink and silver handmade paper comes from pearl paint in chinatown...more fruits of my fabulous trip to nyc last week!

i can't wait to see what everyone will make with this super-fun kit, so i am going to stop talking RIGHT NOW so you can go and download it!!!

happy NSD, darlings!

sushi love

once again last night i set out to meet some challenges, but this time i actually MADE THEM--hooray! :) i used sketch #19 from 365 cards...

...i grabbed the recipe from this week's elements challenge from the design dollies... (to use 3 patterned papers from the same manufacturer; a tag; an uncolored stamped image; red ribbon; & something lime green) ...and i put it all atop a lovely base of kraft as per the current jacksonbelle embellishments challenge.

(digital papers & elements: sushi tonight , gina cunningham, tyggereye art...printed on kodak photo paper & avery label paper; additional elements: patterned paper: scenic route + text from a japanese workbook; tag: k&co; heart stamp: hero arts; ribbon & jump ring: michaels; diamond glaze: judikins; heart dies: cuttlebug; adhesives: tombow monorunner, 3m foam tape, sewing machine)

i used gina's gorgeous sushi tonight minikit again, i just love that thing! this time i cut out the chopsticks and the sushi, mounted it on foam tape, and used a little bit of diamond glaze to give the roe an extra glossy dimensional look. i layered all of the elements according to the sketch and highlighted most everything with loads of ink and plenty of machine stitching. sushi, anyone??!

eenie, meenie, meinie, roe!

i love making funky, unusual-sized cards...right up until the time i have to photo them...at which point i generally vow to convert immediately to A-2's and never stray again! oy.

i mention this because the card you're about to see--made with the new tyggereye SUSHI TONIGHT digital mini-kit-- is accordion folded, with five 2.5 x 2.5" panels. it is ADORABLE in real life. i swear!!! just try to bear that in mind, ok?!

here it is folded up and tied with a bow...being square, it looks fine at this point:

i used some gorgeous green hand-printed paper purchased at pearl paint in chinatown last week; punched circles from some paper co. straw textured paper that's been in my stash for aaaaaaaaages; and for this card i scaled gina's fabulous sushi elements quite small and printed them with their drop-shadow option on matte cardstock. then i used a very fine copic outliner (".1" to be specific) to go around the image and add highlights for a "hand-drawn" sort of look. expanded half-way, the card still looks pretty good:

it was when i tried to photo the entire thing that everything went awry. i just could not get a pic where you could see EVERY frame without it being tiny, crooked and just generally awful; and i'm totally out of time, so we're just gonna go with the best of the worst and call it a day, ok?!

as you can see... (sorta!) ...each panel has a circle, a sushi, and a dymo label. sequentially they read: "eenie, meenie, meinie, ROE!" and then the last panel says, "how about sushi?!" it really *IS* very cute indeed, irl, HONEST! but don't take my word for it, grab up your very own copy of sushi tonight from gina's etsy shop and see for yourself! :)

2 sketches for...SUSHI!!!

having been away from home for 5 days i found--as always--the only things i really cannot live without are lovely husband jeff and the ability/time/supplies to be crafty!* which is why, even though i have laundry galore, dust bunnies the size of tumbleweeds, and enough unanswered emails to wallpaper paraguay, what i did last night was clear a lauren-shaped hole in the living room and make a card using laura's sketch #50. hey--a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, right?! :)

and of course we all know that no matter how many fabulous supplies we possess, the thing we will always want to use most is whatever's brand new! in this case, i had been given a little sneaky peek at the new tyggereye art digital minikit: SUSHI TONIGHT!

strictly speaking, it's not out until next wednesday**...but i just COULD NOT WAIT! i had to have a little play ! it's really gina's fault...if she expects me to practice restraint, she's going to have to start making these things considerably less awesome!!! (& trust me folks...it ain't gonna happen!) i made a hybrid card, just because i really needed to do some real life cutting and pasting!

(digital elements: sushi tonight minikit, tyggereye art; patterned paper: rouge de garance, basic grey + text from a japanese workbook; black glossy cardstock: ranger; adhesives: tombow monorunner, 3m foam tape, sewing machine)

once again, when i cut out the little pieces of sushi i was holding a second layer--in this case of plain black paper--behind the print-out so that in addition to the elements i had silhouettes of their shapes, also. these i glued just slightly offset behind each bit of fishy goodness to make a sort of drop-shadow; i love how that looks! the word strips (which i welded together digitally to form that nice border) and sushi's are printed on photo paper for a little bit of gloss and shine.

in my original vision i had loads of layers of the kit's gorgeously grunged-up papers as the base of the card...it was beautiful and super-colorful...but then, when i went to glue it up, i set everything aside onto some black "rouge de garance" paper and it made the sushi panel *POP* so wonderfully...well, i changed the entire plan in midstream! after that, i decided it only needed a little bit of distressing and sewing to increase the "texture factor"!

more examples from the kit later this week...not to mention lots more new york photos! ♥

*i did work on my new york travel journal every night in the hotel; i'll post pics when it's finished, hopefully next week!
**update: it turns out, GINA couldn't wait either...the sushi kit is out *now*! HOORAY!

best (hybrid) fishes!!!

hooray! i'm back for day two of the big tyggereye art digikit release party!!! as promised, today i have some hybrid cards made with images from gina's gorgeous kit, of the water. first up, i've used one of my all-time favorite greeting card sentiments, "best fishes" in a brand new way...on an anniversary card!

(additional materials: k&co, heidi grace & scrapbook wizard patterned paper; american crafts plastic ribbon; colorbox inks; recollections epoxy hearts; copic outliner; colorbox inks: sewing machine; tombow monorunner & 3m foam tape)

because, of course, the best thing about digi is: not only can you make the elements any size you want, you can use the "flip" command to make a mirror image, and thus you get *TWO* (or 20...or 200!) goldfish for the price of one!

(i should also mention that i made this card using kazan's sketch #50, which is rather fab...see?)

want to hear my favorite "fussy cutting" tip? it doesn't take any more effort to cut 2 or 3 layers than it does to just cut one. seriously. i staple a few extra sheets behind whatever i'm cutting...and in addition to the main image i get some fun silhouettes. this is great if you're paper-piecing, or you can use the extra images as masks for paint or glimmer mist; or you can dress them up a bit with a liner pen & some chalk ink for a completely different look:

(additional materials: autumn leaves & prima patterned paper + hindi newspaper; copic outliner; cherry arte crackle stamp; colorbox & ranger inks; dmc embroidery floss; mambi gem; tombow monorunner & 3m foam tape; coral printed on kodak photo paper)

here i've used another favorite technique--i placed the silhouette koi (cut from chinese newspaper) as a sort of drop-shadow for the one from the kit. i love how it gives me double dimension and interest...for exactly the same amount of work! i've also printed one of the gorgeous watercolor papers from the kit on a transparency and layered it over my "store bought" patterned paper for a completely unique background:

(additional materials: love elsie patterned paper; bazzill kraft cardstock; basic grey alphabet stickers; dymo labels; colorbox ink; copic outliner; sewing machine; tombow monorunner & 3m foam tape; kodak photopaper & 3m inkjet transparency)

just a reminder that all of these lovely elements are from this kit:

available at an etsy shop near you! now scoot on over to gina's blog and see some more "of the water" goodness! ♥

best fishes!!!

ok, i know a lot of people who read my blog love gina of tyggereye art as much as i do, so you're gonna flip over what i have to show you today: creations made with gina's VERY FIRST DIGIKIT, of the water now available in her etsy shop!!!

being the very verrrrrrrry lucky girl that i am, i got to have a little sneak peek over the weekend (thanks, g!) and i had a blast playing with this thing! the papers are GORGEOUS and watercolory...the elements (including one of gina's awesome goldfish!) are beautiful...there's an alphabet and a cool set of numbers and these great labels...and...well, how about if i stop talking so you can see for yourself?! :)

for my first digi-composition, i used the wave element as a clipping mask on several of the divine multicolored patterned papers in PSE. i gave them subtle drop shadows in coordinating colors, and layered them with the very handsome shark on a background of sky paper framed in ocean waves paper. the only thing i used from outside the kit was a font called "ma sexy", to give a little advice we all need from time to time: just keep swimming!

in the next one i used a fabulous quote from henri matisse, "i wouldn't mind turning into a vermilion goldfish"! i can't help but think matisse would've been even MORE enthusiastic about such a project if he'd had the option of turning into one of gina's gorgeous embroidered vermilion goldfish, don't you think?!

again, everything you see is from the kit, with the exception of the fonts (2peas platform shoes & mom's typewriter) and an a couple of anna aspnes' asian script brushes that i've layered in soft colors over the blue-green watercolor paper. the green textured paper, sized just slightly larger, makes a perfect frame in exactly the right color!

and now i know you're longing to go and see what gina made with the kit...so i will bid you a fond farewell until tomorrow when i'll be back with some awesome of the water HYBRID CARDS!!!

my idea was to make an ATC for gina for each one of her fabulous hand-carved tyggereye art stamps that i own. and here they are now (so far, anyway...these things are SUPER-addictive...i know there will be more!!!) :

and here are the cards:
