For this one I drew all the outlines first (<i>using three sizes of <b><a href="https://rangerink.com/products/new-letter-it-fineliner-black-pens-3-pack" target="_blank">Letter It Fineliners</a></b>, which are impressively water-proof!</i>) and then went crazy coloring, shading, flickling, brushing and blotting all of the blue and green Distress Watercolor Pencils from sets 1-3. At the very end, when the piece was thoroughly dry, I added a few details with a white paint pen, then made it into a 5.5" square card.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh81xrspRz1LKnIOmvYuQWnwTq2IOt2pJy3u0h0nuMxDkTzqzyJA4W-cG0HLGZyMIrHPb-FKTDqbxp1DnaXwd8A12Ta4au4bhyL8ier56Hw2fA3ikqSE5TKBUBRNWQdgERDFlzUaUndO5UgFZpxcLde-usspfdd1Rnl305RRyysE2b8X-zuIsh_Uzubq3Y/s1600/MM012-distress%20pencils.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh81xrspRz1LKnIOmvYuQWnwTq2IOt2pJy3u0h0nuMxDkTzqzyJA4W-cG0HLGZyMIrHPb-FKTDqbxp1DnaXwd8A12Ta4au4bhyL8ier56Hw2fA3ikqSE5TKBUBRNWQdgERDFlzUaUndO5UgFZpxcLde-usspfdd1Rnl305RRyysE2b8X-zuIsh_Uzubq3Y/w400-h400/MM012-distress%20pencils.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>lauren bergoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15390124683115764907noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4236003707769495273.post-78037894680782589852024-03-15T01:00:00.084-04:002024-03-15T01:00:00.142-04:00BLING On the Holidays!<p>This fortnight at <b><a href="https://jinglebellesrock.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jingle Belles</a></b> we're <b><a href="https://jinglebellesrock.blogspot.com/2024/03/bling-on-holidays.html" target="_blank">BLING-ing on the Holidays</a></b> by making cards that incorporate jewels, gems, beads, pearls, glitter, stickles or anything sparkly. Here's what I made:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWhae0tPeMgALU_fKtag2R0os0gHSb307TQXUX9X-Otv6JPp0Lp13_8BoFrnCZ7rBo308W4GqK5j3yaZ_JX0MMq6ZSg78ttKlVJxPkyatNerjekaneV1LZNXpfljXK0-834ACfseGG5_8oSgFch3syZNMPAn-QDeX8LsIIdwCBpE0qDrjC45KndPLrKBM/s1472/jb2406-bling1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1466" data-original-width="1472" height="399" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWhae0tPeMgALU_fKtag2R0os0gHSb307TQXUX9X-Otv6JPp0Lp13_8BoFrnCZ7rBo308W4GqK5j3yaZ_JX0MMq6ZSg78ttKlVJxPkyatNerjekaneV1LZNXpfljXK0-834ACfseGG5_8oSgFch3syZNMPAn-QDeX8LsIIdwCBpE0qDrjC45KndPLrKBM/w400-h399/jb2406-bling1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p>This card has a lot of elements (<i>and A LOT of sparkle!</i>) but it came together quickly because nearly everything on it was a leftover! The background was stamped with <b><a href="https://rangerink.com/products/simon-hurley-create-background-stamp-bold-holiday-blooms" target="_blank">Simon Hurley's Bold Holiday Blooms</a></b> and embossed with <b><a href="https://rangerink.com/search?q=tinsel+embossing" target="_blank">Ranger's Green Tinsel and Lime Tinsel Embossing Powders</a></b>. It was one of several panels I made while playing around with said glittery e/p's to create <i><a href="https://rangerink.com/blogs/projects/tinsel-embossing-powder-holiday-card-by-lauren-bergold?=/blogs/projects">this post on the Ranger Project Page</a>; (t</i>he <b><a href="https://rangerink.com/products/archival-ink-pads-emerald-green" target="_blank">Emerald Green Archival-Inked</a></b> mat was made at the same time). The strip featuring two offcuts of green patterned paper and some <b><a href="https://www.eyeletoutlet.com/fancy-long-bling.html" target="_blank">Eyelet Outlet Fancy Long Bling</a></b> I found in my EO box when retrieving the tiny <b><a href="https://www.eyeletoutlet.com/pearl-bling-100-count.html" target="_blank">Pearls</a></b> and the <b><a href="https://www.eyeletoutlet.com/jewelbrads.html" target="_blank">Jewel Brad</a></b> that's holding the silk poinsettias (<i>I took apart an ancient poinsettia garland from the big box store a few years ago and am still enjoying the fruits of that labor</i>) and pre-diecut glitter paper snowflakes. I have no idea where that giant pale green holly leaf came from, but it was the perfect size, shape and color so on it went!</p><p>Our <b><a href="https://jinglebellesrock.blogspot.com/2024/03/bling-on-holidays.html" target="_blank">Jingle Belles BLING It On</a></b> challenge runs until the evening of Wednesday, March 27th. I stumbled upon this fun library catalog card on which I had apparently, at some point, started drawing some mandala shapes... but then, for reasons which now elude me... stopped and abandoned said card. So it seemed like a good idea to finish the mandala, add some color, a scrap of map, a peachy rose and a tiny vintage car. I drew a semi-symmetrical flower/mandala shape with several sizes of black <b><a href="https://rangerink.com/search?q=fineliner" target="_blank">Letter It Fineliner Pens</a></b> on an offcut of watercolor paper, then painted it by (<i>sequentially</i>) smooshing Sky Blue, Cornflower, Night Sky, Cactus Flower, Petunia and Violet Archival Inks onto my craft mat and picking the colors up with a waterbrush full of Isopropyl Alcohol. I also flicked various colors onto the wet or dry surface; and a couple of times when there was a lot of extra ink on the mat, I turned the piece upside down and randomly blotted up the color. At the very end, I added additional details with a white paint pen and finally chopped the whole thing in half and made it into a pair of 5.5" cards.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvTkn0bwrc7QJGl4BlemB1Hq8P3ytSbCh3WMWV6qCmkJr-0LzKq1gc7KTlb27s31bct_Af4pq1I7Rpqr-WUXvLq0dlGqNABlGlA6UlqYDOow192sNbmDNVi7_H-sF8uXHlG-HbW4dzhoWfH__QFrNMjCB0NeyxylOMNHZC5TIIA1AhWSgiSFVlo0uGXc4/s1920/MM009wv%20archival%20flower%20mandala-staged.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="1920" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvTkn0bwrc7QJGl4BlemB1Hq8P3ytSbCh3WMWV6qCmkJr-0LzKq1gc7KTlb27s31bct_Af4pq1I7Rpqr-WUXvLq0dlGqNABlGlA6UlqYDOow192sNbmDNVi7_H-sF8uXHlG-HbW4dzhoWfH__QFrNMjCB0NeyxylOMNHZC5TIIA1AhWSgiSFVlo0uGXc4/w400-h400/MM009wv%20archival%20flower%20mandala-staged.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>lauren bergoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15390124683115764907noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4236003707769495273.post-78224259184896597242024-03-02T10:00:00.045-05:002024-03-02T10:00:00.133-05:00The WRITE Stuff<p>I love to crochet, I may have mentioned that, lol. A lot of the things I make are teeny tiny and crocheted in the round, but this time I WENT BIG and made this <b><a href="https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/crafty-pencil-pillow-2" target="_blank">Crafty Pencil Pillow</a></b>, using am adorable pattern from <b><a href="https://www.ravelry.com/designers/ashley-stallsworth" target="_blank">Ashley Stallsworth who is on Ravelry</a></b> and Instagram as <b><a href="https://www.instagram.com/acraftyconcept/" target="_blank">A Crafty Concept</a></b>. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLcr0icyUGBmoRuq2EE_ao5sfKpkHVTFJcURPoDoZYahG1Nf2KCm2yfgf1af6c66kbRxeYpxbmAyjRGa3l5tOYuciCcT31hQB2vcAybN-iGDv4WEAgnwihpQrnlFJQkEkRwARfsNX6_ljAo1_T7SIrmYcexRnyLtf97Fxa0tqx9jT0Udv9a4xGO2OjIoA/s1920/crochet%20pencil-blog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1523" data-original-width="1920" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLcr0icyUGBmoRuq2EE_ao5sfKpkHVTFJcURPoDoZYahG1Nf2KCm2yfgf1af6c66kbRxeYpxbmAyjRGa3l5tOYuciCcT31hQB2vcAybN-iGDv4WEAgnwihpQrnlFJQkEkRwARfsNX6_ljAo1_T7SIrmYcexRnyLtf97Fxa0tqx9jT0Udv9a4xGO2OjIoA/w400-h318/crochet%20pencil-blog.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Details for yarncrafters: I used Vanna's Choice from Lion Brand Yarn and a J hook. The yarn colors are: Mustard (barrel of pencil); Fisherman (wood); Charcoal (lead); Silver Heather (eraser holder); and Pink (eraser). So break out your newest dies, your oldest dies, your favorite dies... But there is NO arguing with the results, because seriously HOW CUTE are those tiny houses?! Apparently, the last time I used it, I organized the dies into three groups and wrote a cheat sheet (<i>see pic below</i>) to remember what pieces to cut from the same patterned paper and what to cut from a variety of different papers, and that considerably streamlined the process, so it's possible you'll be seeing it a lot more in future. This might be the ultimate die set for breaking out all the paper scraps of one color and going to town... or in this case... going to a tiny color-coordinated village, lol! I swapped out the trees and stars from the set in favor of <b><a href="https://www.eyeletoutlet.com/winter-tree-brads.html" target="_blank">Eyelet Outlet Snowy Pine Tree</a></b> and <b><a href="https://www.eyeletoutlet.com/snowflake-brads.html" target="_blank">Snowflake Brads</a></b>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggSJnDC81t0n4xVZnc6KQcZKctyBdaqINPfBp6HtOmKrN_WG-j6PLJnyfMiiuN-qvv0wQJ_JPVrwlKPyiSt9Nmv7jbAwjBtYqLAM3Cs0DQNF6v-q2gWDRm_iKoGvXZ7t1o28qRBGV_dZmyjbWyX5h0bXZ3DxrA8anSO_t9HCPBBI1xEc8WwMAA9WnoAx4/s1920/JB2405-diecuts-die%20set.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="1920" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggSJnDC81t0n4xVZnc6KQcZKctyBdaqINPfBp6HtOmKrN_WG-j6PLJnyfMiiuN-qvv0wQJ_JPVrwlKPyiSt9Nmv7jbAwjBtYqLAM3Cs0DQNF6v-q2gWDRm_iKoGvXZ7t1o28qRBGV_dZmyjbWyX5h0bXZ3DxrA8anSO_t9HCPBBI1xEc8WwMAA9WnoAx4/s320/JB2405-diecuts-die%20set.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div>Our <b><a href="https://jinglebellesrock.blogspot.com/2024/03/holiday-cards-to-diecut-for.html" target="_blank">Jingle Belles Holiday Cards to DIE(cut) For</a></b> challenge will run until Wednesday evening, March 13th, and we'd love for you to stop by, check out the inspiration, and start planning your diecut-centric card!<div><br /></div><div><i><span style="font-size: x-small;">*FYI: You can also use punches or items cut from electronic cutting machines like Cricut or Silhouette!</span></i></div>lauren bergoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15390124683115764907noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4236003707769495273.post-46755490473021580042024-02-28T03:00:00.040-05:002024-02-28T03:00:00.260-05:00You Are SEW Amazing<p>What's cuter than Lawn Fawn mice who can sew? The leaves are from a Catherine Pooler die set called Perfect Foliage which I acquired at Paper Anthology during the 2020 lockdown. And finally, the scraps on the which the birds are stamped and leaves are diecut are a mixture of ancient Basic Grey and new-ish Craft Consortium. My current trusty Dymo Label Maker is only a few years old, but I have had/used one for cardmaking since at least the turn of this century!<p></p><p>Our <b><a href="https://shoppingourstash.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">SOS516: It's Not Easy Being Green</a></b> challenge will run until Monday evening, March 11th; why not unearth some of your favorite older stash items and play along?</p>lauren bergoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15390124683115764907noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4236003707769495273.post-57190213980401544332024-02-26T08:00:00.075-05:002024-02-26T08:00:00.136-05:00It's a Very Vecchi Mandala Monday<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This week I've combined some of my all-time favorite <b><a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085025585620" target="_blank">Wendy Vecchi</a></b> products, stretching from her brand new Spellbinders' Garden Collection (<b><a href="https://spellbinderspaperarts.com/products/garden-party-sds-stencil-bundle-from-the-from-the-garden-collection-by-wendy-vecchi?_pos=8&_sid=46a3970e7&_ss=r" target="_blank">Garden Party Stencils</a></b> and <b><a href="https://spellbinderspaperarts.com/products/heartfelt-thanks-scallops-etched-dies-from-the-from-the-garden-collection-by-wendy-vecchi?_pos=13&_sid=46a3970e7&_ss=r" target="_blank">Heartfelt Thanks & Scallops Dies</a></b>); to her <b><a href="https://paperanthology.com/?s=archival+ink+pad&post_type=product&dgwt_wcas=1" target="_blank">Ranger Archival Inks</a></b> (<i>full list of colors below</i>); and all the way back to her gorgeous <b><a href="https://paperanthology.com/?s=studio+490&post_type=product" target="_blank">Studio 490</a></b> stamps and stencils to make a massive multi-media mandala! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK8SLVq59YxlKYdbbhlj_ykdfKZAZLt6NGeiverU-cFzzXxHY3gWYaQhUECkIzPMAbkcnDqqOg_sbb5vlzAgZz2ssclcEq7fP3oB82a7MRtQ5TxCO3CfrJP4kBWuUjEyEhinb8rKWyhy56uspAgh-ljwzyURlRIiH52mmqN-3nYCEJDguiIjuDP_HAjBQ/s1739/MM009-WV-garden%20party-plain%20mandala.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1739" data-original-width="1739" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK8SLVq59YxlKYdbbhlj_ykdfKZAZLt6NGeiverU-cFzzXxHY3gWYaQhUECkIzPMAbkcnDqqOg_sbb5vlzAgZz2ssclcEq7fP3oB82a7MRtQ5TxCO3CfrJP4kBWuUjEyEhinb8rKWyhy56uspAgh-ljwzyURlRIiH52mmqN-3nYCEJDguiIjuDP_HAjBQ/w400-h400/MM009-WV-garden%20party-plain%20mandala.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I used the <b><a href="https://paperanthology.com/?s=studio+490&post_type=product" target="_blank">older Studio 490 background stamps and stencils</a></b> to create seven different panels of patterned paper. I used Vanna's Choice from Lion Brand Yarn, but to achieve a slightly larger turtle (<i>from snoot to tail Shelly measures about 11"</i>) I held two strands together and used a J hook. Colors used: Honey (shell); Mustard (petals); and one strand of Sweet Pea with one strand of Dusty Green for the rest... a combination I devised because I didn't have enough of either color to make all the parts; as it turned out, the slightly mottled coloring is much more Turtle-y than either would've been alone! With the help of our handsome <b><a href="https://www.eyeletoutlet.com/song-bird-brads.html" target="_blank">Eyelet Outlet Bluebird and Robin Brads</a></b> and some fun speech bubbles, here is my fanciful idea of what those birds are saying to each other. Already?!<p>It's the second-to-last Mandala Monday of February (<i>already?!</i>) and this one is colorful in a restrained sort of way; and... more unusually... pretty close to being entirely symmetrical! I did use my Simon Hurley Dye Ink pads in a new way and I so enjoyed making them, I figured I'd just roll with it. The "new" inking technique is basically just a funky version of the good old Direct to Paper method: I chose a bunch of analogous colors, then used the corners of each to draw a swoosh across the paper. I experimented with more/less pressure, and varied the angle at which I held the ink pads against the paper to see what sort of marks could be made. When I had a "base" of color... (there were still white areas of paper showing, but the basic idea and shapes were there) ...I took a waterbrush and dragged the colors into, around, and over each other. When the paper was completely covered with ink, I let it dry before coming back in with white and gold paint pens to add a bit more structure to the lines. Then I used two sizes of black Letter It Fineliners to outline the paint pen areas, and also to create the impression of more dimension within the various colors. Finally, I flicked the whole thing with clear water and let it sit for five minutes before blotting off the excess. Proof of how much more fun this is to DO rather than read (<i>or write</i>) about: I made the second panel before the first one was even fully dry!!! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSfs4ktD_w2ygsTjJI53Wxybjsjvcm5lpxsMn6tmO93jiLp9FvJ31Lj9oR329zCW3o1RD9-a33I5s1DOblJZQvknZs0YjMBwaihx1CII3bExL_Z22dqgMVxjZinufh0MV4l1fM1tX4pvEDl-LnhUl-ZyuCphoc_9OPXTCYNRSYJbc2MnPv8kbz58g-c9g/s1894/wavy-simon%20inks-staged.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1894" data-original-width="1894" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSfs4ktD_w2ygsTjJI53Wxybjsjvcm5lpxsMn6tmO93jiLp9FvJ31Lj9oR329zCW3o1RD9-a33I5s1DOblJZQvknZs0YjMBwaihx1CII3bExL_Z22dqgMVxjZinufh0MV4l1fM1tX4pvEDl-LnhUl-ZyuCphoc_9OPXTCYNRSYJbc2MnPv8kbz58g-c9g/w400-h400/wavy-simon%20inks-staged.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's somewhat important to use a palette composed of colors that all blend well together. If you don't know which shades will fuse into cool new colors and which will make mud, I highly (<i>HIGHLY</i>) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">recommend purchasing (<i>or bookmarking online</i>) a color wheel! In the meantime, the junior high school acronym we learned to memorize the colors of the spectrum in order : <b>ROY G BIV</b> ...which stands for <span style="color: #990000;">Red</span>, <span style="color: #ffa400;">Orange</span>, <span style="color: #f1c232;">Yellow</span>, <span style="color: #38761d;">Green</span>, <span style="color: #01ffff;">Blue</span>, <span style="color: #2b00fe;">Indigo</span> and <span style="color: #674ea7;">Violet</span>... is most helpful! Colors that are directly next to each other on the wheel (<i>and in the acronym</i>) are analogous and basically guaranteed to blend well; this includes looping around from Indigo and Violet to Red, btw. If this sounds like a boring limitation, remember that within each color, there are MANY different hues and they're all fair game!</div><p></p>lauren bergoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15390124683115764907noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4236003707769495273.post-86799425364760883662024-02-16T01:00:00.006-05:002024-02-16T01:00:00.133-05:00JB2404: Text Me<p>This fortnight's <b><a href="https://jinglebellesrock.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Jingle Belles</a></b> theme is called, "TEXT ME" for which we'd like you to create a holiday card that celebrates text. That might mean using letter stickers, dictionary pages, texty patterned paper, or just creating a card where the sentiment is the star... just using a small sentiment doesn't count - text of some kind should be the star of the show. I'm sure that says something about me, but let's move on! I've definitely had MFT's Polynesian Paradise stamp set for years and years (<i>possibly a decade?</i>) and I suspect it's probably out of print, but I still love it and use it, as you can see. This time I stamped all the elements on scraps of ancient, Basic Grey not-quite-solid-colored papers, then added a bit of shading on top with my Prismacolor pencils. I diecut that super-chunky Lawn Fawn sentiment twice, so that I could add the white layer behind the red and have it pop out a bit more. I also used a black brush pen to add just a tiny bit of depth around the edges for the same reason. The square panel with the foliage is from a company called Paperhouse and I have no idea how I came to have it; behind that is more Basic Grey solid-not-solid goodness. </p><p><b><a href="https://shoppingourstash.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">SOS's Put Your Best Face Forward</a></b> challenge runs until the evening of February 26 and we'd love for you to join the fun!</p>lauren bergoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15390124683115764907noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4236003707769495273.post-81642960703655402082024-02-12T08:00:00.014-05:002024-02-12T08:00:00.129-05:00The Mandala's So Bright, You Gotta Wear Shades<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's a Dramatically Deconstructed Mandala Monday, in which all of the usual shapes have been included, but they're kind of floating across the page in quite a casual manner.
