word to your mother

in a timely sort of manner, this week at shopping our stash we are making mother's day cards, since the american version of that occasion will take place on sunday, may 13th. here's what i made:

flowers cut from a vintage, falling-apart garden book i found at an estate sale; doily is a cheery lynn die cut from a scrap of funky gold paper i have no recollection of acquiring; background is older creamy sheet music topped with the rest of a frankly disappointing pack of off-brand rub-on transfers from ages ago; pearl flourishes: recollections; gold patterned paper: kaisercraft; adhesives: elmers brand gluetape, 3m foam tape, sewing machine

yes i've gone a bit vintage and shabby chic... quel surprise, right? but it's a style i always enjoy and as a matter of fact this card is exactly the style and the colors that my mom likes most, which is kind of an important consideration when it comes to making a mother's day card, lol. in the spirit of stash-shopping i tried to bring in and use up some crafty accoutrements rather than just using all vintage collagey bits, so there is a diecut doily (cut from very funky weathered gold textural paper that i have NO IDEA where it came from); a couple of pearl flourishes that i've snipped apart and rearranged to fit better around the flowers AND... i used the entire rest-of-the-packet of some inexpensive store brand white flourishy rub-on transfers that frankly never rubbed on all that well. the nice thing about this style, though, is that you can use something like that in the background, where it's rather distressed look works to your advantage. i realize they're hard to see in the photo, so here's a mid-process shot:

you can see that although i obviously couldn't attach the upper layers before making the background, i had already selected, trimmed and "dry fit" them to the sheet music. so i knew to concentrate the rub-on layers towards the upper right and lower left corners.

and of course i knew exactly where the flowers and doily should go, because i used the current sketch at sketch saturday, although as you can see i played with the proportion pretty considerably, lol!

there's lots more mother's day inspiration to be found at SOS... why not treat yourself to some o'that right now, darlings? ♥
