both sides now*

the other day june asked me how i conceal the adhesive inside clear cards, and as i was getting ready to email her back, i realized that this might make a good blog post. (ok, ok, what i actually realized was i didn't HAVE a blog post, but with some judicious padding and a few pics i could make this into one. so i did. sometimes it's THAT SCIENTIFIC, folks.) :)

before we get started, i need a favor, please: i need you to pretend that these photos are somewhere near consistent in lighting. or at least not embarrassingly bad and awful. yes, i know they ARE embarrassingly bad and awful--in fact i've bumped the contrast up in some of 'em to make the adhesives as visible as possible; but since they're only for illustrative purposes, work with me, ok? thanks.

right, so the question was, "how do i conceal the adhesive inside clear cards?" and the short answer is, i don't. or at least not completely. anticipating the follow up question, "doesn't that bother you?" nope. i don't really worry about it, and here's why: most "civillians" (aka--non craftees) just do not look closely enough to notice! seriously. trust me. trust me!

having said that, i do try to minimize the appearance as much as possible. which is one of the reasons i prefer printed transparencies to plain for card bases...adhesive is a lot less noticeable when there's something else going on. case in point, my 2S4Y sketch card from this weekend. would you like to see the back?

can you see the adhesive?? cause all i've done is tombow around the edges, as neatly and as straight as possible. g'head, click the photo bigger if you want. irl, it's visible...but it's pretty faint. and it's done quite neatly. and it's the back of the card.

wanna see the inside? here ya go:

this time, i've used rectangular pieces of foam tape on the flowers and the journaling card. it's 100% visible. but it's placed among rectangular lampshades and couches and so forth, so i don't THINK it's the first thing you notice. actually, if i had really cared about it, i could have placed my foam bits carefully *ON* the couches, etc; which are completely opaque.

if you look to the right, you see the back of my handstitching which follows the scalloped trim; and again, it's unconcealed. i could've used holbein stitch to make the back look exactly like the front. if it was in the middle of the card, or on a clear transparency, i might have; but it's tucked way into the spine, so i just made sure i started and ended neatly, and took care weaving in my ends.

here's a different clear card that i made in august. this transparency has less printing on it:

this time, you can definitely see the line of the tombow runner. you can see the hardware end of my brad. you can see the clear gluedot stuff they put on the back of gem flourishes. does it look awful?? ok, i realize it's entirely possible that it DOES LOOK AWFUL to you, in which case i'll have quite helpfully convinced you never to embark on clear cards. you're welcome! :)

here's an even more glaring example, in a card from last spring (which uses one of gina's AWESOME hand-carved stamps, btw!):

duuuuuuuuuuuuuude!
foam-tape-A-GO-GO!!!

ok, so i made a neat rectangle, which is centered and lines up with the grid. other than that, i am utterly unapologetic. because i happen to LIKE the look of the raised panel on the outside more than i DISLIKE the foam tape on the inside. if martha stewart wants to show up at my door with a tastefully decorated truncheon and the miranda warning embroidered on a cushion, i'll go quietly. whilst you savor that mental picture ask yourself how i got the lace cardstock on there, though...

and the answer is: i xyroned it! in my case, more for easy even coverage than anything else. but i think you'll agree, THAT really is verrrrrrrrrry hard to see, even irl. it's probably impossible in the photo. which proves that if you DO care about how the inside looks, the problem is not insurmountable. howsabout a side-by-side (by-side) comparison on a CLEAR transparency:

far right: tombow. VERY visible indeed through the unpatterned acrylic. even i don't care for this.

center: xyron. there's maybe a slight shadow; more of a darkening of the paper color, which is even all-over the shape. i'm fine with it.

left: i've lined up and glued a circle of the exact same size to the inside of the card. they cover each other precisely, so that there is not a bit of glue to be seen anywhere; yep, it's the ultimate disguise.

so what have we learned?

that "invisible" adhesive is possible with a little pre-planning?
(sure.)

OR
that visible adhesive isn't the end of the world?
(maybe.)

AND
that lauren will go a long, LONG way to make a blog post outta NUTHIN'?
(definitely!)

*with no disrespect to judy collins, this is one of my all-time LEAST FAVORITE songs. rounding out the top five in this category: "send in the clowns", "midnight at the oasis", "wind beneath my wings", and last, but by no means least, "my heart will go on". of course, merely by mentioning them, i will have every one of these songs stuck in my head for all eternity. i blame celine dion. for all of it. i suspect she's had a hand in global warming, too. somebody call al gore & turn her in, ok?! :)

sketchy

once again it's been too long since i've done a sketch over at 2S4Y...but laura's #38 was far too awesome to be resisted!

not only is it a flat-out great sketch... (well, duh! 2S4Y doesn't do tat, now do they?!) ...as soon as i saw it, i knew that i wanted the card base to be a transparency, with the rectangular panel on the inside, and the "spine" and embellishments on the outside. and believe it or not, i stuck to my very first idea the whole way through!

(transparency: hambly; paper & diecuts: k&co madeline; journaling block: k&co amy butler; rub-on sentiment: autumn leaves; pearls and gems: kaiser; inks: colorbox; embroidery floss: dmc; adhesives: tombow mono runner, 3m foam tape)

one of the many things to love about k&co's madeline collection is that both the papers and the diecuts are double-sided, and thus the perfect choice for clear cards. just in case you thought i had forsaken hand-stitching now that i am machine-ready, au contraire! i love *BOTH*...and pretty equally, i think; in this case the soft colors seemed to cry out for the extra texture of embroidery floss. i used all 6 strands for a nice thick look and i think it's the perfect accent for the scallops and around the sentiment. (plus there is something so soothing about sitting for half an hour and handstitching, dontcha think?!)

here's a picture that shows a little better which bits are where. i've grouped the flowers and the sentiment pretty closely together in order to have a little "coverage" on the inside when the card is closed. that way i can write a my greeting (it's almost certainly a birthday card, but i like to hedge my bets!) and sign my name without it showing from the outside!

lauren's rule #1:
if you're reading this & you'd like to play, you're TAGGED!

lauren's rule #2:
if you're reading this & you'd like to skip it, you're EXCUSED!

lauren's rule #3:

52Q: 43 (last year)

HOORAY! as of this post i am officially caught up on 52Q! and this card is one of my favorites, as well. wouldja believe...the bird silhoutte cut from calendar paper JUST HAPPENED to be on my worktable, leftover from the bits i thought i was going to use on paul's collage, when i started to think about this question??! talk about your creative kismet!

question 43: what were you doing this time last year?

(materials front & back: bits of an old calendar, an envelope & an insurance form; basic grey patterned paper; k&co alphabet rub-ons; colorbox inks; copic & uniball pens; mambi gem)

text on front reads, "this time last year:"

text on back reads, "(a lot like this year!) same house, same jobs, same cars, same hobbies...you know you've hit middle age when 'a boring life' seems like a really GREAT THING!"

this was quite a quick one to make. the longest part--by far--was the time i spent looking for the half-completed card which had slid into one of my hanging files whilst i was looking for coordinating paper to use for the back. of course, it's never a bad thing to clean out a drawer, is it? ...even if you wind up doing it by accident...in the middle of a completely different project... :)

52Q: 42 (holiday)

here's a bit of a christmassy 52Q for ya!

question 42: what's your favorite holiday?

(materials front & back: patterned paper: hambly, fancy pants, dcwv, prima, ki, basic grey, mustard moon, creative imaginations; vinyl alphas: staples; pearls: kaiser; epoxy hearts: paperchase; xmas stickers: love elsie & making memories; pens: uniball, sakura, copic & galaxy; inks: colorbox)

text reads, "i ♥ christmas. i ♥ twinkling lights & sparkly decorations. i ♥ holiday movies & cheesy tv speicals. i ♥ wrapping presents & making cards. i ♥ bayberry candles and the scent of freshly cut pine. and i really REALLY ♥ all kinds of christmas music!"

as you can see, i am still VERY MUCH into my tearing phase. (i don't know why ripping paper into small pieces is so very satisfying at the moment, but it is! and heck, i figure it's cheaper and more convenient than therapy, right?) not only did every bit of paper on this thing come from the scrap file, the bits which compose the tree were all very small strips indeed! which is a bit of a pity: projects like this utterly validate my appreciable pack-rat tendencies. maybe i will make lots of small torn trees for my holiday cards and try to use up the rest of the embarrassingly small scraps!

if these words look like nonsense to you, get an IMMEDIATE eye exam!

(kidding!)

obviously. these words ARE nonsense. but why have i filled one transparency with nonsense words and another with splodges of paint?

well, you see, it was this way: i made a collage as the base of a birthday card for my friend paul, who's an amazing painter!* (ok, this thing is 12 x 12" and one-sided...i am using the term "birthday card" a bit elastically) anyway, i really liked how it came out.

but i also wanted to include my favorite barnett newman quote** about aesthetics***, and thus needed to fit the words on. and i wasn't sure they'd still show up on the busy backgound. and i knew i didn't have time to start over if they didn't. so i stuck some "junk letters"on a transparency... (ok, a lot of them, technically speaking, are *NUMERALS*; but they're the approximate size & shape of the letters i'd be using--which essplains the nonsense words!) ...and placed it over said collage.

and i was soooooo right, wasn't i? they really don't stand out enough. so then i thought, i'll slop a bit of paint over the parts of collage which are right under the words, so they'll be more visible. but what color of paint would i use? and how sloppy should it be? and which bits exactly needed to be covered?

so i tried out some color/style swatches out on another transparency...and then i went back and forth between the two until i knew what effect i wanted...

and finally, when i had made all my "mistakes" and figured out how to correct them, i actually put the paint, and then the text, on the collage.

if you think this whole rigamarole sounds insane...well YEAH! but who else do ya know that's gonna be both daring (assaying several untried techniques on the same project!) and over-cautious (trying them "safely" before committing!) at the same time??! see, right there is EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW about me!!! :)

in the end, it was worth the fuss, because i ♥LOVE♥ the way this turned out, and it's a really good example of what i meant when i said i'm always "chasing" a mental picture i can sort of only see out of the corner of my eye: this baby probably comes as close as i've ever been to reproducing what was in my head! (dontcha LOVE IT when that happens?!)

(materials & misc. details: vintage dictionaries and a german bird book; scraps of vintage sheet music; elderly vinyl letter stickers from staples ("liberated" from work--hence the lack of S's T's & N's...i like the improvised letters however!); several coats of folk art metallic pearl white paint (mixed with a few drops of liquitex white gesso); colorbox creamy brown chalk ink; i machine-stitched rather wonkily around the edges several times and then inked and distressed them. my only regret is in justifting the quote to the right instead of the left...i like the look, BUT...the birds are almost all facing the other way, and they'd've been interacting with the text more on the other side. but i'm nit-picking...only b/c i am otherwise quite obnoxiously happy with this!)

happy birthday dear paul, and many more!!!

*if you're thinking, "hey wait! what happened to the notebook paper collage?" wellllllllllllll... as much as i looooooooove that thing...it was totally wrong for this. so i'm usin' it for something else (which i'll show ya when it's done) and i started over for paul.

**if you like modern art i recommend the fascinating and informative film who gets to call it art? if you DON'T like modern or abstract art...i recommend it TWICE AS MUCH, actually! :)
***aesthetics being the branch of philosophy dedicated to the critical interpretation and cultural significance of art.

do they sell these at radio shack?

actually...considering that we have *SIX* (!!!) remotes, each controlling a different bit of our entertainment electronics array, it's entirely possible that one of them DOES activate an army of evil robots, unbeknownst to me.

LHJ often tells me how important it is to read the manuals which come with one's appliances. i contend that my strategy--MARRY SOMEONE willing to read the manuals which come with one's appliances--is an equally valid approach. in my defense, it's worked perfectly well for 24 years!

on a completely different subject, here is something that came in the mail on saturday, and i haven't stopped smiling yet:

it's from the lovely june. she was trying to make a "lauren-y" thank you card, and BY JINGO she succeeded, didn't she?! i myself have made quite a few cards that were much less lauren-y than this one! thank you miss june, i shall treasure it always!

~♥♥♥~

happy monday darlings!

i do hope there's some leftover halloween candy in your packed lunch today, but if not...just stand next to a co-worker, lookin' sad...and as skinny as possible! ;)
